Could you describe your latest book, One Hundred Percent Me?
A little girl is used to hearing questions about her looks all the time. "Where are you from?" "What are you?" These questions are a constant reminder from others that she is different. As she embraces her identity and culture, she teaches others that she belongs, that the differences they notice are part of what make her unique, special, and herself....

Publisher Comments

New York Times bestselling author of Girl With a Pearl Earring Tracy Chevalier makes her first fictional foray into the American past in The Last Runaway, bringing to life the Underground Railroad and illuminating the principles, passions and realities that fueled this extraordinary freedom movement.

In New York Times bestselling author Tracy Chevalier’s newest historical saga, she introduces Honor Bright, a modest English Quaker who moves to Ohio in 1850, only to find herself alienated and alone in a strange land. Sick from the moment she leaves England, and fleeing personal disappointment, she is forced by family tragedy to rely on strangers in a harsh, unfamiliar landscape.

Nineteenth-century America is practical, precarious, and unsentimental, and scarred by the continuing injustice of slavery. In her new home Honor discovers that principles count for little, even within a religious community meant to be committed to human equality.

However, drawn into the clandestine activities of the Underground Railroad, a network helping runaway slaves escape to freedom, Honor befriends two surprising women who embody the remarkable power of defiance. Eventually she must decide if she too can act on what she believes in, whatever the personal costs.

A powerful journey brimming with color and drama, The Last Runaway is Tracy Chevalier’s vivid engagement with an iconic part of American history.

Another great read by Tracy Chevalier, who really has a gift for writing historical fiction and making it come alive for the reader. This novel lets you peek into the lives of some of those who kept the underground railroad going, who had to put their personal convictions out in front of convenience. Slavery is so hard to read about and seeing what people went through to help slaves reach freedom made this page turner hard to put down. I always love historical fiction for the knowledge attained from reading it as well as the entertainment value and Tracy Chevalier is so good at delivering both.

Tracy Chevalier has written a classic story of the heart versus the head in this tale of Honor Bright, a young English Quaker woman newly arrived in America, who must decide for herself whether to aid escaping slaves in defiance of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and the wishes of her new husband's family. Though Quakers are morally opposed to slavery, the consequences if caught aiding runaways are severe. Chevalier's narrative is complex and compelling; even Donovan the slave catcher who confuses and excites Honor is not an entirely unsympathetic character. Her struggles to see the inner light in everyone and find her place in a strange new land make this a must read for lovers of historical fiction.

"The Last Runaway" by Tracy Chevalier I laughed, cried & cheered main character, Honor Bright, a demure English Quaker as she arrives in Ohio via a tumultuous boat ride from "across the pond". Set in the 1850's, the author presented a vividly-detailed colorful, informative fictional history highlighting the town of Oberlin & the freedom movement along the Underground Railroad. As my husband is a graduate of Oberlin College Music Conservatory, we are frequent visitors to this midwestern area.
