The Last Stone focuses almost exclusively on a series of interrogations with a man who gave a statement about a kidnapping 40 years ago. The police knew he was lying then and they know he is lying now. Bowden deftly keeps the story taut and compelling while holding the aperture to its narrowest setting. The book is ultimately about confronting unrepentant mendacity and asks if victory over a pathological liar is truly possible. Recommended By Keith M., Powells.com
