Excerpt from Les Batailles de la Vie: Dette de Haine
Par une brumeuse et froide matinee de decembre, dans le salon d'une riante bastide de la route de la Seyne, aux portes de Toulon, devant un grand feu, etaient groupes, causant et fumant, sept hommes, dont le plus age n'avait pas depasse la quarantaine. Une table a jeu, sur laquelle les cartes et les jetons attendaient la reprise de la partie, venait d'etre abandonnee. Midi sonnait, et le maitre de la maison, medecin principal de la marine, laissant pour un instant ses hotes a eux-memes, etait alle voir si le dejeuner s'appretait.
