Publisher Comments

Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. The Lovely Bones is such a book — a phenomenal #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its narrative artistry, its luminous clarity of emotion, and its astonishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world.

My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973.

So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her — her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling.

Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, The Lovely Bones succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy

“My name is Salmon, like the fish. First name: Susie. I was 14 years old, when I was murdered on December 6th 1973.” Susie Salmon was an ordinary kid until she was lured in an underground den in a cornfield and was brutally raped and murdered. After she died, nothing was ever the same for her. She carries on life in heaven. Her heaven is exactly how she wants it to be except that everyone that isn’t dead isn’t with her. She is watching over her loved ones who are also struggling to keep the family together. Jack Salmon aka Dad, has an obsession to finding Susie’s murderer. He won’t give up until he has found out. But what happens when no one believes him? Susie lives like a ghost, hidden from the world but can see everything there is to see. No matter how bad she wants to help her family live on, she can’t. Abigail Salmon aka Mom, is drifting apart from her family. After Susie’s death all she can see is her. Will she be able to stay with her family and continue the life she once had? Lindsey and Buckley Salmon aka brother and sister, they are struggling to have that ordinary life without Susie being there. Lindsey is becoming many things at once, things that Susie never was. Buckley doesn’t understand what they mean by Susie is not coming back, will he ever learn? Susie goes through many difficult situations in this story. She feels the guilt, of destroying her family and friends hearts. Can she live with this pain? Alice Sebold’s novel is an absolute treasure; I would rate it a 5 star book. Its absolute breath taking and goes to a whole new level. Its heart wrenching, heart breaking and you won’t be able to put it down. I really liked this book because it makes you think more about the world we live in today. It goes through moving on from the death of a loved one, friendship, and love. All in all this is an extraordinary book and you will be impressed after you read it. I recommend this book to anyone that loves a good heart warming, thrilling book.

First of all, it should be said that this could be a very difficult book emotionally for some people. I was one of those people. Aside from that, Sebold, herself is a victim of rape, her true story can be read in her book "Lucky". Lovely Bones, is about a girl who was murdered and raped. The premise of the book, is the girl in Heaven, looking down and seeing how everyone is reacting to her death and the hunt for her killer. The book is well-written and very raw. Sebold, doesn't stray away and is not afraid to shock or possibly offend the reader. I picked up the book on a recommendation of an English Teacher who had taught it in one of her classes. I must say, I was glad she told me about it. The book is very poignant, it has a very strong voice and I think it is well worth the read.
