Algorithms increasingly run our lives. They find books, movies, jobs, and dates for us, manage our investments, and discover new drugs. More and more, these algorithms work by learning from the trails of data we leave in our newly digital world. Like curious children, they observe us, imitate, and experiment. And in the worlds top research labs and universities, the race is on to invent the ultimate learning algorithm: one capable of discovering any knowledge from data, and doing anything we want, before we even ask.
Machine learning is the automation of discoverythe scientific method on steroidsthat enables intelligent robots and computers to program themselves. No field of science today is more important yet more shrouded in mystery. Pedro Domingos, one of the fields leading lights, lifts the veil for the first time to give us a peek inside the learning machines that power Google, Amazon, and your smartphone. He charts a course through machine learnings five major schools of thoughts, showing how they turn ideas from neuroscience, evolution, psychology, physics, and statistics into algorithms ready to serve you. Step by step, he assembles a blueprint for the future universal learnerthe Master Algorithmand discusses what it means for you, and for the future of business, science, and society.
If data-ism is todays rising philosophy, this book will be its bible. The quest for the universal learning is one of the most significant, fascinating, and revolutionary intellectual developments of all time. A groundbreaking book, The Master Algorithm is the essential guide for anyone and everyone wanting to understand not just how the revolution will happen, but how to be at its forefront.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE MASTER ALGORITHM
The holy grail of computer science is a machine that can teach itself, as we humans do, from experience. Machine learning could help us do everything from curing cancer to building humanoid robots. Pedro Domingos demystifies machine learning and shows how wondrous and exciting the future will be.”

Synopsis
We live in a data-driven machine age, one where computers are learning how to program themselves and one single algorithm could very well be applied to everything. With data as its fuel, machine learningthe automation of discovery, a kind of scientific method on steroidswill become ever more powerful. If data-ism is the rising philosophy of the day, this book, The Master Algorithm will be its bible.
But machine learning is about more than big data: it is about solving the mysteries of intelligence itself. In The Master Algorithm, computer scientist Pedro Domingos not only charts a course through the five major schools of thoughtsymbolist, connectionist, evolutionary, Bayesian, and analogistbut also demonstrates the ways in which theyve all failed at constructing the Master Algorithm; he unveils his own theory, Alchemy, along the way.

Synopsis
Under the aegis of machine learning in our data-driven machine age, computers are programming themselves and learning aboutand solvingan extraordinary range of problems, from the mundane to the most daunting. Today it is machine learning programs that enable Amazon and Netflix to predict what users will like, Apple to power Siris ability to understand voices, and Google to pilot cars. These programs are already helping us fight the war on cancer and predict the movements of the stock market, and they are making great headway with instant language translation and discovering new laws of nature.
But machine learning is incomplete, and its practitioners across the globe are seeking the most powerful algorithm of all. The Master Algorithm will not be limited to solving particular problems but will be able to learn anything and solve any problem, however difficult, and Pedro Domingos, a trailblazing computer scientist, is at the very forefront of the search for it. With the Master Algorithm in hand and data as its fuel, machine learningessentially the automation of discovery, a kind of scientific method on steroidswill become the most powerful technology humanity has ever devised. And The Master Algorithm will be its bible.
