Publisher Comments

Designed specifically to help those preparing to take the National Counselor Exam (NCE) or the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE), this powerful resource includes numerous sample questions and four full-length practice exams, and offers pertinent information about the NCE and CPCE, including discussion of its rational, structure, format, and scoring procedures. Each chapter consists of sections addressing major topics within its CACREP core content area. Each section has five self-administered, multiple-choice questions to test knowledge of the material and to allow readers to maximize learning while reviewing the course concepts in a manageable fashion. An especially helpful Chapter 9 focuses on what future counselors need to know about getting a job and marketing themselves as professional counselors as they make the transition from student to practitioner. Also included is a Glossary of key terms and several full-length practice tests to help with retention of the material.

The ideal resource and tool, the new edition of this practical guide features:

  • A new chapter, From Envisioning to Actualization: Marketing Yourself in the 21st Century, addressing transitioning from student to professional counselor. (Ch. 9).
  • Voices from the Field features and self-assessment activities providing everyday perspectives from practicing counselors and counselors in training.
  • The most recent scholarly information and references in updated citations and sources throughout the book, while maintaining a focus on classic citations underscoring the rich history of counseling theory and research.
  • New test preparation items comprising two full-length sample NCE administrations and two full-length CPCE administrations, allowing readers to test their mastery of the content. (Appendixes)
  • An updated Glossary of terms facilitating vocabulary review as an additional study aid for the exams.
  • Revised and updated content to better align with the 2009 CACREP standards, current NCE/CPCE content, and expected changes in the 2016 CACREP content standards throughout the book.
