Kelsey Ford: Powell's Picks Spotlight: Lidia Yuknavitch's 'Thrust' (0 comment)
I used to be a purist with my books. I never dog-eared the pages, never wrote in the margins, never cracked the spine. Lately, though, I’ve become a bit looser with that...

Publisher Comments

One devoted modern girl + a meddlesome, traditional grandmother = a heartwarming multicultural romantic comedy about finding love where you least expect it.

Raina Anand may have finally given in to family pressure and agreed to let her grandmother play matchmaker, but that doesn’t mean she has to like it — or that she has to play by the rules. Nani always took Raina’s side when she tried to push past the traditional expectations of their tight-knit Indian-immigrant community, but now she’s ambushing Raina with a list of suitable bachelors. Is it too much to ask for a little space? Besides, what Nani doesn’t know won’t hurt her…

As Raina’s life spirals into a parade of Nani-approved bachelors and disastrous blind dates, she must find a way out of this modern-day arranged-marriage trap without shattering her beloved grandmother’s dreams.

Review

“Lalli’s debut is a delightful, multicultural romantic comedy full of humorous banter and loads of life lessons about family, happiness, love, honesty, and acceptance.” Booklist (Starred Review)

Review

“A funny and moving exploration of modern love.” Balli Kaur Jaswal, bestselling author of Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows (A Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick)

Review

“Bright and vivid, and fresh and funny — I was utterly charmed by this insight into Raina’s struggle to be the perfect Indian daughter.” Veronica Henry, author of How to Find Love in a Bookshop

This book is described as a romantic comedy; but it didn't make me laugh. On the contrary I struggled through it wondering when it would end. Raina Anand is brought up by her grandmother. Raina is a modern Toronto woman and her grandmother, nani is a traditional Indian woman. They love each other but each has her own view when it comes to love and marriage. When Raina turns 29 nani decides it is time for Raina to find a suitable "boy" and draws up a list of potential suitors. Raina tries to date these men while her heart is somewhere else. There is lots of drama and the author throws in her views about lifestyle choices. The drama ends quite as expected and it is a relief when it does.
