An American Library Association Notable Book

In discrete disclosures joined with the intricacy of a spider's web, James Galvin depicts the hundred-year history of a meadow in the arid mountains of the Colorado/Wyoming border. Galvin describes the seasons, the weather, the wildlife, and the few people who do not possess but are themselves possessed by this terrain. In so doing he reveals an experience that is part of our heritage and mythology. For Lyle, Ray, Clara, and App, the struggle to survive on an independent family ranch is a series of blameless failures and unacclaimed successes that illuminate the Western character. The Meadow evokes a sense of place that can be achieved only by someone who knows it intimately.

Review

"Gifted poet James Galvin blends fiction and fact into a haunting story . . . This careful, honest, and passionate exploration gives The Meadow its power and beauty. "-Harry Middleton,The New York Times Book Review

Galvin’s novel is a masterpiece of historical vignettes stitched together into a cohesive story. While the story has characters, such as App and Lyla, the true center of the tale is meadow itself. The tales of the west are wonderfully depicted in a beautiful transition for Galvin from poetry to prose. Leaving behind Clint Eastwood and John Wayne the real spirit of endurance, freedom, and hardship are experienced in lieu of gun-slinging entertainment. It was the dangers of freezing temperatures, sudden illness, and rigors of building a home out of the land that provide the antagonist of the story. This is revealed through anecdotes of real life accounts of the Worster family members and others, who, like all of us, win sometimes and lose sometimes, with the costs potentially being dire. The reader receives visions of over a one-hundred-year span of history detailing nature in beautiful abundance, humanity through the family, and the constant battle between change and constancy. The change in human life, weather, and time are contrasted with the landscape that remains immovable. In the end this novel feels like a departure from the normal plot based story, but leaves you with a satisfying message to ponder. Questions about the things we experience and their value are left open to reflection.

One of the most beautifully crafted stories I have read in years, this picture of lives, both wild and human along the Colorado/Wyoming border is stunning. I feel simultaneouly compelled to share it, yet I'm unwilling to part with it - I'm afraid it wouldn't come home! It will touch your heart, and turn your mind to older and wiser ways of being. It is haunting and powerful food for the soul.
