Synopsis
Since its fourth edition, Medical-Surgical Nursing: Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems has remained the #1 medical-surgical nursing textbook on the market. Sales continue to improve with each edition. From June 2003 to April 2004, the sixth edition of the text sold 61,173 copies, compared to 141,902 total sold of the fifth edition--almost half of the previous edition total in less than a year. The continued success of this book can be attributed to solid, well-written content and an extremely committed and cohesive author team. Along with her coauthors, Sharon Lewis is dedicated to effectively presenting complex medical-surgical nursing content in an understandable format appropriate for nursing students in associate degree and baccalaureate programs.
The goal for the seventh edition is to update key medical-surgical content while retaining and enhancing those aspects of Lewis which are useful and attractive to students and faculty. This encompasses the following:
- Presenting current, essential medical-surgical content in a clear and consistent format while continuing to evaluate reading level and improving readability where possible.
- Retaining the unique levels-of-care approach for nursing management-with separate headings for Health Promotion, Acute Intervention, and Ambulatory and Home Care-that prepares the nurse to effectively intervene at various stages of illness.
- Utilizing special features to highlight the content that is most relevant and challenging for today's nursing students, including patient teaching, gerontologic considerations, cultural and ethnic implications, collaborative management, nutritional therapy, and NCLEX review.
- Improving the format and functionality of the text and ancillaries to increase appeal and usefulness.
- More fully integrating the book with the accompanying electronic products (Evolve website, student CD-ROM).
In spring 2004, several hundred users and non-users of Lewis were polled to identify content and features that faculty find most and least useful. Questions included: What has been the general reaction of faculty and students to the book? Is the level and depth of coverage appropriate for your type of program? Are there any chapters that you do not use or assign? What major strengths of the sixth edition should be maintained or developed further in the revision? How much do you use Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC), functional health patterns, and concept mapping, and does this content need to be increased in the revision of the book?
Over 150 instructors responded to the online questionnaire. These survey results-along with extensive pre-revision reviewer feedback-were carefully considered when developing the following revision plan.
