Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments

People use metaphors every time they speak. Some of those metaphors are literary — devices for making thoughts more vivid or entertaining. But most are much more basic than that — they're "metaphors we live by," metaphors we use without even realizing we're using them. In this book, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson suggest that these basic metaphors not only affect the way we communicate ideas, but actually structure our perceptions and understandings from the beginning. Bringing together the perspectives of linguistics and philosophy, they offer an intriguing and surprising guide to some of the most common metaphors and what they can tell us about the human mind. And for this new edition, they supply an afterword both extending their arguments and offering a fascinating overview of the current state of thinking on the subject of metaphor.

Review

"A very enjoyable and intellectually stimulating book which raises, and occasionally answers, a number of important linguistic questions....As Lakoff and Johnson demonstrate on every page, the most important fact about metaphor is that it is experienced — and this book demands not so much to be read as to be experienced. The ideas that well up during the experience represent as much of the reader's conceptual structure as of the authors'. This trait, common to all human communication, is intensified in this book by Lakoff and Johnson's artistic vision, resulting in a powerfully human book about a powerful human topic." John M. Lawler, Language

Synopsis

The now-classic Metaphors We Live By changed our understanding of metaphor and its role in language and the mind. Metaphor, the authors explain, is a fundamental mechanism of mind, one that allows us to use what we know about our physical and social experience to provide understanding of countless other subjects. Because such metaphors structure our most basic understandings of our experience, they are "metaphors we live by"-metaphors that can shape our perceptions and actions without our ever noticing them.

In this updated edition of Lakoff and Johnson's influential book, the authors supply an afterword surveying how their theory of metaphor has developed within the cognitive sciences to become central to the contemporary understanding of how we think and how we express our thoughts in language.

This is a very interesting book, which explores the role of metaphors in the English language and argues that the majority of communication is done in metaphors. In particular the authors explore space and time metaphors which makes for some rather interesting insights to how American culture handles space and time. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys linguistics or wants to explore how language use impacts everyday life. This is a dense read, so you'll need to spend some time working with it, but you'll get a lot out of it.

this book is very good but is not easy to read. though the book was wriiten in nearly 30years, but in Vietnam, it seems brand new to the linguistic researchers. I know this book, but I have no chance to read.

This book is a revolutionary breadthrough of looking into the relationship between language and cognition, which is as influencial as Chomsky's GT grammar to the 1960s.
