For 50 years, I’ve been listening to my husband’s stories about growing up on San Diego’s Mission Bay when it was more of a small fishing village than the popular resort it is now...

Publisher Comments

Newbery Award-winning author Richard Peck is at his very best in this fast-paced mystery adventure. Fans of The Tale of Desperaux, A Little Princess, and Stuart Little will all be captivated by this memorable story of a lovable orphan mouse on an amazing quest.

The smallest mouse in London’s Royal Mews is such a little mystery that he hasn't even a name. And who were his parents? His Aunt Marigold, Head Needlemouse, sews him a uniform and sends him off to be educated at the Royal Mews Mouse Academy. There he's called "Mouse Minor" (though it's not quite a name), and he doesn't make a success of school. Soon he's running for his life, looking high and low through the grand precincts of Buckingham Palace to find out who he is and who he might become.

Queen Victoria ought to be able to help him, if she can communicate with mice. She is all-seeing, after all, and her powers are unexplainable. But from her, Mouse Minor learns only that you do not get all your answers from the first asking. And so his voyage of self-discovery takes him onward, to strange and wonderful places.

Review

"[T]he story soars because of DiCamillo's lyrical use of language and her understanding of universal yearnings. This will be a pleasure to read aloud." Booklist (Starred Review)

Review

"This achingly beautiful story shows a true master of writing at her very best....This superb book is beautifully written in spare yet stirring language....An ever-so-marvelous tale." School Library Journal (Starred Review)

Review

"DiCamillo spins the tale of Edward, transformed by the lives he touches. The reader will be transformed too. Sumptuous gouache illustrations complement the old-fashioned, dramatic narrative. Keep the tissues handy for this one." Kirkus Reviews

Review

"The prose is spare and considered, and the characters are fully drawn and complete. A further treat is Bagram Ibatoulline's artwork throughout the text. Lush and elegant, it lends Edward the dignity he so richly deserves." Children's Literature

Synopsis

Prepare yourself for a miraculous journey with Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo.

Someone will come for you, but first you must open your heart...

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely.

And then, one day, he was lost.

Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hoboes' camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. And along the way, we are shown a true miracle — that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.

A timeless tale by the incomparable Kate DiCamillo, complete with stunning full-color plates by Bagram Ibatoulline, honors the enduring power of love.

Synopsis

In the tradition of E. B. White and Kate DiCamillo comes the magical and moving story of a bird-like boy who longs to fly

Ten-year-old Nashville doesnt feel like he belongs with his family, in his town, or even in this world. He was hatched from an egg his father found on the sidewalk and has grown into something not quite boy and not quite bird. Despite the support of his loving parents and his adoring sister, Junebug, Nashville wishes more than anything that he could join his fellow birds up in the sky. After all, what's the point of being part bird if you can't even touch the clouds?

With an ear for language and a gift for storytelling, Michelle Cuevas will remind fans of Stuart Little and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon that anything is possible. Even flying.

Synopsis

The whimsical "autobiography" of an imaginary friend who doesn't know he's imaginary—perfect for fans of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and Toy Story

Jacques Papier has the sneaking suspicion that everyone except his sister Fleur hates him. Teachers ignore him when his hand is raised in class, he is never chosen for sports teams, and his parents often need to be reminded to set a place for him at the dinner table. But he is shocked when he finally learns the truth: He is Fleur's imaginary friend! When he convinces Fleur to set him free, he begins a surprising, touching, and always funny quest to find himself—to figure out who Jacques Papier truly is, and where he belongs.

Readers will fall in love with Jacques's sweet, quirky voice as he gives them a look at life from an incredible new perspective.

I found my copy at a commuter rail station in Belen, NM. I had gone there to the depot and three books were laying in the weather. I picked up all three and put them in my car. When I arrived home I looked them over. I pulled the china rabbit story. I read the story slowly. I am a 71 year old man, and gotta say I was teary eyed at the end. Thank you "ma" and the excellent art work.

This is my favorite book of all time. I read it once when I was little, and I'm only 14 now, but I've spent all of my Middle school time searching, and asking around, for the name of this book, when all I could remember was the end. Now that I've found it, I'm going to read it a thousand times. Finally finding this book again made me cry.

This is my favorite of Kate Dicamillo's wonderful stories. I was mesmerized by Edward's desire to return home. I read the story in one sitting and immediately made my entire family read it. It is one of our all-time favorites.

I read this amazing story to my daughter while we were on a road trip. Not only was she begging me to read after it got dark, she had to see the beautiful artwork at the same time. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

Dicamillo has done it again. Written us a book that we will want to add to our bookshelves to keep. Purchase this for your kids but make sure to read it yourself. It will warm you from your head to toes. If you ever had that one special association with a doll in your life, you must treat yourself to this read. We always knew that the doll could think and feel and love us back! Recognizing that Edward is a grand and splendid rabbit, the publisher did it right by using wonderful paper, an unusual size for the book and extraordinarily beautiful illustrations. I would suspect that this book is on the short list for a Newbery Award this year.

This book is wonderful. I rate it much higher than a mere 5. I highly recommend it for both adults and children. I thought it would be a cute story to read with my daughter. It was that and much much more. I found myself really caring about Edward and many of the other characters as well. It may sound corny but the book really touched my heart. I took it out of the library. I am going to buy a copy of my own. I would love to own a china rabbit like Edward. This is a book to treasure. I loved this book.

This book, like all her others, was completely amazing. Though it appears to be a children's story, i believe that it will leave you breathless at the end. You will fall in love with Edward Tulane, a rabbit who finally figures out what love is. I know i did. sincerely, Lauren

I'd like to put all the best adjectives on this review including fabulous, special, great, but that wouldn't tell anyone anything about the book, right? So I'll just say that someone compared the book to Velveteen Rabbit & they're absolutely correct, but Kate DiCamillo does a beautiful job of writing a very different book. Edward Tulane is such a real character with quirks, flaws, but yet you find yourself falling in love with him yourself. It is a good book & one I think I'll keep forever.
