Excerpt from Monsieur Veut Rire
Pendant que Chambon, tres nerveux, jetait des tas de papiers dans la cheminee, ouvrait et fermait brusquement des tiroirs, s'agitait, murmurait de vagues paroles. Antonin, le valet de chambre, tres calme et tres froid, mettait de l'ordre parmi les meubles et les bibelots. Il demanda:
- Je puis allumer tout ca, maintenant, Monsieur?
Chambon fit un signe et, bientot, les papiers flamberent. Puis il montra du doigt l'indicateur des chemins de fer.

Chambon avait dans son valet de chambre, garcon vieux, pose et methodique, une confiance absolue. Antonin le servait depuis quinze ans, depuis que ses premieres speculations l'avaient tire de la misere.
Si je ne pars pas ce soir, je serai arrete demain soir ou apres - demain au plus tard, dit Chambon avec conviction.
Monsieur doit... connaitre ces affaires - la mieux que moi, declara Antonin. Alors, il faut partir. Allez, Monsieur, avec de l'argent on n'est embarrasse nulle part.
