Now a Major Motion Picture

The distinguished British man of letters J. R. Ackerley hardlythought of himself as a dog lover when, well into middleage, he came into possession of a German shepherd. Tohis surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the“ideal friend” he had been searching for in vain for years. My Dog Tulip is a bittersweet retrospective account of theirsixteen-year companionship, as well as a profound andsubtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heartof all relationships. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, Ackerley tells of Tulip’s often erratic behavior and very canine tastes, and of his own fumbling but determinedefforts to ensure for her an existence of perfect happiness.

My Dog Tulip has been adapted to screen as a major animated feature film with a cast that includes Christopher Plummer, Lynn Redgrave, and Isabella Rossellini. Synopsis

Now a Major Motion Picture

J.R. Ackerley's German shepherd Tulip was skittish, possessive, and wild, but he loved her deeply. This clear-eyed and wondering, humorous and moving book, described by Christopher Isherwood as one of the "greatest masterpieces of animal literature," is her biography, a work of faultless and respectful observation that transcends the seeming modesty of its subject. In telling the story of his beloved Tulip, Ackerley has written a book that is a profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness abiding at the heart of all relationships.

Anyone who loves dogs will love this book. J. R. Ackerly' My Dog Tulip is written in such a lovely British way that you can almost hear his accent. I have never owned a dog, but Mr Ackerly has given me a very clear understanding of the joy the friendship a dog can provide. This is a small gem of a book and everyone should own a copy for their library.

The movie was terrific. I don't know how the book is because I haven't read it yet. Why would I comment on a book I haven't read? All I was trying to do was place my order, and I got sucked into this review process. I'm going ahead with this just to see if I do it, if then I'll be able to place my order.
