Synopsis
Excerpt from Nature in Middle High German Lyrics
Now, it is perfectly true that the Proners precede the Germans in time, and it is eqdafly true that German Minnesong owes its existence to Provencal example. But that is far from saying that Germany would have produced no songs of nature and love had it not been for that external stimulus. In fact, I am very strongly of the Opinion that we should have had much more artistic and charming lyric poetry in medieval Germany than is actually the case, had the Proven cal influence not made itself felt.
