Synopsis
Excerpt from Naval Heroes of to-Day
It would have been a simple matter to run forward with the rest of the crew and save himself but Ingram deliberately turned and ran aft. He was racing with the torpedo. It was a question of seconds. The torpedo was only a few feet away when Ingram suc ceeded in picking up and throwing over the last of the boxes of explosives. His pres ence of mind had saved the ship. When the torpedo struck, Ingram was the only member of the crew in the vicinity. He was thrown into the water and drowned before assistance could reach him, being the only man on board to lose his life.
