Perhaps, dear reader, you share my ambivalence about how to regard the existence of 2020. I mean, it definitely happened...

Powell's Picks of the Month

Hot new releases and under-the-radar gems for adults and kids.

Staff Pick

Nothing Rhymes with Orange might be my favorite picture book of the year (and it's only July). Adam Rex's rhymes, asides, and illustrations are pitch-perfect, just bizarre enough, and outright hilarious for adults and kids alike. Do you want your three-year-old rhyming "lychee" with "Nietzsche" and reciting, "The berries joke with honeydew, like people who are funny do!"? Yes. Yes, you do. Recommended By Jill O., Powells.com

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments

We all know nothing rhymes with orange. But how does that make Orange feel? Well, left out! When a parade of fruit gets together to sing a song about how wonderful they are — and the song happens to rhyme — Orange can't help but feel like it's impossible for him to ever fit in. But when one particularly intuitive Apple notices how Orange is feeling, the entire English language begins to become a bit more inclusive. Beloved author-illustrator Adam Rex has created a hilarious yet poignant parable about feeling left out, celebrating difference, and the irrefutable fact that nothing rhymes with orange.

Review

"You will never, ever, ever find a better, truer, more big-hearted poetic saga about an orange, a lychee, and dancing Friedrich Nietzsche. It begs to be sung aloud. And will make you a better person. Completely beyond good and evil!" Jon Scieszka, first National Ambassador for Young People's Literature

Review

"This sad sack orange is one of the most relatable picture book characters I've had the pleasure of reading about in a long time. And finally a book that teaches kids the correct pronunciation of Friedrich Nietzsche!" Carson Ellis, author/illustrator of Du Iz Tak

Review

"Funny, clever, and whimsical....Fruitful in every sense of the word." Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

Adam Rex's "Nothing rhymes with Orange," is a read aloud picture book which is sure to be a children's favorite. It will strike a chord with you the reader too because it touches on the topic of feeling left out. The book is well written, amusing and yet poignant and has a happy ending which children are sure to love. A must for every child on your gift list.
