Enchanting, unusual, feminist fairy tale, magical realism, just a few of the terms i associate with this book. The world is not unlike our own but the curls of magic throughout really make it something else. At it's core it's about a woman from a dysfunctional family who marries into an even more dysfunctional family but it's really so much more than that.

Feminist fairy tales can be hard to come by. Feminist fairy tales that are well-written, captivating, and uniquely crafted are rarer still. However, Setiawan weaves a rich novel and receives an A+ for execution on all accounts. Of Bees and Mist tells the story of several women drawn together both by fate and by magic. Their journeys are marked by the struggle for power and the transition into womanhood, ill-fated marriage, and the bond between mothers and daughters.

Well, if you're looking for a page turner this is it. Not a thriller, yet it has plenty of them. Mystical magic, characters you will love to hate. Sometimes I just wanted to jump into this book to rescue one of the characters. I am sure many people will recognize some of these character types in their own lives. Let's just say this is one book that could never bore you. The author has successfully created an atmosphere so unique and yet so familiar. It's not a place you've ever been to and yet, it will seem strangely familiar. You really need to read this book. Enjoy...

Narratively and atmospherically unusual, I couldn't put this novel down. I was compelled by each character, I was continually surprised, devastated and delighted. It was a work metaphorically rich. I simply loved it.
