Vuong's debut novel is easily my favorite book I've read in the past year. He writes from a place of incomprehensible loss and heartbreak, but also from deep, abounding love for the world. The prose is evocative, lyrical, and I found myself struggling not to underline every sentence as each was a perfect gem I want to revisit again and again. Vuong's novel reads like a love letter: to immigrants, to single, working mothers, to loss, to queerness, to the complexities of familial relationships, to this difficult country, and to language, even when it is inextricably insufficient and vital, and in this case, ever so captivating. Ocean Vuong is the author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Night Sky With Exit Wounds, winner of the Whiting Award and the T. S. Eliot Prize. His writings have also been featured in The Atlantic, Harper’s, The Nation, New Republic, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. Born in Saigon, Vietnam, he currently lives in Northampton, Massachusetts. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is his first novel.
