I used to be a purist with my books. I never dog-eared the pages, never wrote in the margins, never cracked the spine. Lately, though, I’ve become a bit looser with that...

and#8220;This book is like a cool breath of fresh air on a hot summer day. Itand#8217;s full of delight, whimsy, joy, and hilarity, yet it goes much deeper than that. Each member of this little flock has her own personality traits, quirks, preferences, and logic. Some are compassionate and nurturing, others are competitive and mean-spirited. With her photos and drawings throughout the book, Scheuer entertains, teaches, and captivates the reader. You will learn more about chickens than you ever thought possible, and will fall in love with them along the way. I highly recommend this book!and#8221;

and#8220;From the first page, Lauren Scheuer and her flock are the next-door neighbors you wish you had. She is witty, charming, and constantly delighted by the antics of her backyard hens. This is the book I wish I'd read when I brought my first chicks home from the feed store. As an artist and as a writer, Lauren perfectly captures the joy and heartache of backyard chicken-keeping. Whether you're raising a flock yourself or only dreaming of it, you'll love this book.and#8221;

Synopsis

This delightful memoir about life with a spirited, sometimes reckless flock of backyard chickens—inspired by the author’s popular blog, “Scratch and Peck”—includes color photographs and imaginative illustrations throughout.

When longtime illustrator and lover of power tools Lauren Scheuer was looking for something new to build, she got the idea to raise backyard chickens, which would necessitate a fun coop-building project. As soon as her newborn chicks arrived in the mail her whole family fell in love with the little bundles of fluff. Not just colorful lawn ornaments, the birds proved to have endearing individual personalities—and wild adventures ensued.

Once Upon a Flock tells the whimsical, wonderful stories of Lauren’s backyard chickens, their friendships, rivalries, and secrets. Lauren’s flock includes Hatsy, the little dynamo; Lil’White, the evil Orpington; and Pigeon, the fixer-upper chicken. We meet Lucy, a special needs hen who bonds with Lauren and invites her into an intimate friendship. And we witness the transformation of Lauren’s dog Marky from chicken-predator to proud watchdog. By enthusiastically immersing herself in the flock, Lauren discovers that love, loss, passion and resilience are not only parts of the human experience, but of the chicken experience as well.

Throughout the book, Scheuer documents the humor and drama of the flock’s adventures with beautiful photos and charming illustrations. At once humorous, poignant, informative, and quirky, Once Upon a Flock is a feathered tale like no other.

My 12 year old daughter totally loved this! (I think she must have read it after bedtime when I wasn't looking because of how soon she finished.) This book is totally fun because of the pictures, illustrations and observations of the author. If you are crazy about chickens or want to explore with your kids, this is a fabulous book for you. If you want to find out about what feed, illnesses, breeds and how to take care of chickens, you will want to look elsewhere. I recommend this creative, cute, fun book to all chicken loving kids and kids at heart.
