NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE starring ANNE HATHAWAY and JIM STURGESS

It's 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. Over twenty years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the same day — July 15th — of each year. Dex and Em face squabbles and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

Review

"Those of us susceptible to nostalgic reveries of youthful heartache and self-invention (which is to say, all of us) longed to get our hands on Nicholls's new novel. . . . And if you do, you may want to take care where you lay this book down. You may not be the only one who wants in on the answers." New York Times Book Review

Review

"Just as Nicholls has made full use of his central concept, so he has drawn on all his comic and literary gifts to produce a novel that is not only roaringly funny but also memorable, moving and, in its own unassuming, unpretentious way, rather profound." The Guardian (London)

Review

"Who doesn't relish a love story with the right amount of heart-melting romance, disappointment, regret, and huge doses of disenchantment about growing up and growing old between quarreling meant-to-be lovers?" Elle, Top 10 Summer Books for 2010

Review

"[Nicholls] has a gift for zeitgeist description and emotional empathy that's wholly his own. . . . [A] light but surprisingly deep romance so thoroughly satisfying." Entertainment Weekly

I came across this book by chance at my library online site and read it on my Kindle. I love finding a great book by surprise - it seems more of a treasure. I'm a sucker for great dialogue, and this had that. While the situation of the characters was depressing, the conceit of the plot was interesting enough to make the story enjoyable. There was a constant tug of hope that the two characters would pull out of their self-imposed miseries and get it together in the end. I'm not sure it was my BEST book of 2012, but it was certainly great and it was my best surprise.

An interesting read and not just for the(possibly) unique method of telling the story. In a way, I suppose it is simply less confusing than The Time Travelers Wife. We are simply meeting two people as they meet through life. A reason to read this book is to understand that the characters are clearly drawn far better and more completely than could possibly be completed in the movie by the same name. Having watched the movie first, I had very little motivation to pick up the novel as the movie did not do much more than draw one dimensional characters. Seeing these two move through life from a distance left little to like. Reading the novel, the pieces are filled in and though I still am not sure about all motives (like life), it is far more satisfying.

I loved the way that this book captured a snapshot of each person on the same day each year. In a strange way, it made the book more relateable. While stories normally focus on the big events (weddings, birthday, major struggles) this book simply focused on the day to day of life surrounding those events. One Day is an excellent character study. To spend twenty years with Dexter and Emma makes you feel as if you know them by the time the book is over.

I found the concept of writing a story over 20 years using the same day fascinating and truly enjoyed the book, until 2006!

One Day affected me more than any other book this year, so much so that I feel the punch in my gut when I reminisce on the conclusion. Nicholls's writing is just superb, and the story is an all-time favorite when it comes to studies of friendship, love, and character. I highly recommend!

Read this book before the movie comes out! They are bound to ruin it-- it is a funny, sweet, charming, smart story of 2 friends and their near misses as romantic partners. Part Nick Hornby, part Harry Met Sally, it traces the friendship of two college classmates and the ups and downs of their lives, separately and together. A hard book to put down and hard to forget.

One Day is a book I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did. The story showcases the lives of two people on the same day every passing year and the their subsequent ups and downs as they grow. Not only are the characters believable but their flaws are endearing, to the point where I cared to find out what happened to them. By the time it reaches the end I was completely hooked and sad to leave the story behind.

There were many things I enjoyed about this book. For example I loved how the author took the date of these two people meeting, July 15, 1988, and for the next 19 years we see a glimpse of them during each year on that date. You find out what Dexter is doing and then also what Emma is doing. Sometimes they are friends, sometimes they are not, sometimes they are more than friends. As you explore each new chapter you never know where they will be in the next one. I felt myself wanting to read faster but at the same time to want to take it slowly and enjoy the book. The only thing I didn't enjoy about the book was the bittersweet ending, it came too fast and was unexpected, but then again not every ending is going to be all cake and ice cream. This story definitely made me happy and sad, I laughed and got even angry at the characters for some of it. I would definitely recommend this book, it was a great read.

Excepting the professions of the Em and Dex, this book takes two very normal people, and shows how an amazing friendship can stand the test of time and mistakes. No matter how many "wrong" choices Dex and Em make, they are there for each other through all of it, leading to the ending you expect - and the one you don't. I haven't had a book make me bawl like a kid in eons, and I'm so glad to find one that touched me as much as One Day did.

A most excellent and engaging book about how love can withstand the test of time, distance, and other people. I thoroughly enjoyed the book right up to its bittersweet ending.
