En el Pr logo al letor, de las Novelas exem plares, escrito durante el verano de 1613, men ciona Cervantes por vez primera los Trabajos de Persiles, libro que se atreve a competir con Heliodoro, si ya por atrevido no sale con las manos en la cabeza, . Tales palabras permiten suponer que la obra estaba bastante adelantada en aquella fecha; y esto mismo se infiere de un terceto del Viage del Parnaso (cap. IV), poema que se cita ya como terminado en el susodicho Pr logo de las Novelas.
