Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Publisher Comments

With his Kramer's Ergot series cartoonist, editor and publisher Sammy Harkham has created a comics anthology that outdoes all others — in size, style and content. Poor Sailor is his own pen and ink on bristol contribution to Kramer's Ergot #4, reproduced in mini format. It is based on Guy de Maupassant's short story, At Sea, the message of which is the tragedy that occurs when property protection prevails over human suffering and loss.

Poor Sailor uses few words to tell the similar tale of a woodsman who trades a simple but contented life for adventure at sea, and the high price he must pay for it. Harkham's quiet tone is eery, emotional, honest and moving — all of the things this gifted cartoonist believes a comic should be. Poor Sailor is a must have for comics enthusiasts of all dispositions.

This is a short graphic novel, told almost entirely in wordless single-page illustrations. It tells the poignant story of a man called to the sea, and what befalls him. I liked the art style -- it reminded me a bit of Craig Thompson's work on Goodbye, Chunky Rice, but overall the book was a little too spare for my tastes.

Poor Sailor is a simple yet beautifully poignant graphic novel. The story, with few words and gorgeous illustration, is a deeply emotional tale that lingers with the reader long after the last page has turned. This was my first graphic novel, picked up on a whim, and Poor Sailor has definitely attracted me to the medium. For fans of graphic novels as well as novices, the strength of this novel will not disappoint, and may even elicit some tears.
