Il est malaise de connaitre la vie de Noel du Fail, faute de documents. La source principale ou nous pouvons puiser, ce sont ses uvres: il y a certainement rapporte ses souvenirs et elles sont meme, jusqu'a un certain point, une autobiographie, mais sans suite, ou il embrouille les faits en les denaturant sans doute avec la liberte d'un romancier, et ou, comme de juste, il ne dit que ce qu'il veut. On n'arrive a suivre le fil qu'au prix de bien des recherches.
C'est un Breton des environs de Rennes. Probablement naquit-il a Chateau-Letard, a 3 lieues au sud de Rennes, sur la paroisse de Saint-Erblon. La sa famille avait une terre, ou elle menait l'existence des gentilshommes campagnards. Rien ne subsiste plus aujourd'hui de ce manoir qui a ete rase et dont Du Fail n'a jamais decrit les alentours.
