Publisher Comments

The missing piece of the internationally bestselling Kurt Wallander mystery series: the story of Kurt Wallander's beginnings.

Revealing a side of Wallander that we have never seen, the long stories collected in The Pyramid are vintage Mankell. Here, we see Wallander on his homicide first case as a twenty-one-year-old patrolman, as a young father facing unexpected danger on Christmas Eve, as a middle-aged detective with his marriage on the brink, as a newly separated investigator solving the brutal murder of a local photographer, and finally as a veteran detective, with his signature methodical and instinctive work style, discovering unexpected connections between a downed plane and the assassination of a pair of spinster sisters.

In these five riveting tales we watch Kurt Wallander come into his own not only as a detective but as a human being

Synopsis

Filling in the missing pieces of the internationally bestselling Kurt Wallander mystery series, The Pyramid tells the story of Wallander's beginnings through five gripping short mysteries.

About the Author

Internationally acclaimed author Henning Mankell has written nine Kurt Wallander mysteries. The books have been published in thirty-three countries and consistently top the bestseller lists in Europe, receiving major literary prizes (including the UK's Golden Dagger for Sidetracked) and generating numerous international film and television adaptations. He has also published many other novels for children, teens, and adults. In addition, he is one of Sweden's most popular dramatists.

Born in 1948, Mankell grew up in the Swedish village Sveg. He now divides his time between Sweden and Maputo, Mozambique, where he works as a director at Teatro Avenida. He has spent many years in Africa, where a number of his novels are set.

After having read all of the Wallander novels, I came to this collection of short stories. They are revealing as to Wallander's character development, and every bit as good as Mankell's many novels (which was a pleasant surprise - it is not always the case that good novelists make good short story writers.) While Stieg Larsson got a lot of attention in 2010, and was often compared to Mankell (only because they share genre and nationality), Larsson had nothing on Mankell. Henning Mankell writes also writes about sensational subject matter - but without being sensational. His characters are world weary and his work is thought provoking.

A great collection of short stories from the police career of Kurt Wallander. The cases range from his first to ones later in life. You are able to get a good sense of what type of person Wallander is, and a view into Swedish life. It was the first book by Mankell I've read, but definitely makes me want to read more!
