Synopsis
Excerpt from Remarks on the Present State of Classical Scholarship and Distinctions in the University of Oxford
As regards the first, it is notorious that no instruo tion whatever emanates from the Greek chair which is available to the younger members of the Univer sity. What the benefit is which the labours of its present occupant have conferred upon classical lite rature in general is known to all the world, and needs no testimony of ours. But this is not the point. The fact is admitted, that no lectures are given, and no benefit immediately derived to our younger students by the circumstance of our pos sessing, in the person of our Professor, the most accomplished scholar and critic in the country.
