Excerpt from Report of a Committee of the Trustees of Columbia College: Appointed to Inquire Into the Condition of the Institution, and to Consider Such Measures as Might Be Judged Expedient to Increase Its Efficiency and Usefulness
By the reference made to the Committee at the time of their appointment, it became their duty to inquire into the present and past administration of the system of education and discipline of the College and Grammar School, and their condition in respect to government, order, discipline and efficient and thorough instruction, and the observance of the statutes; to report fully upon the matters referred, stating their Opinion thereon and if they should find any defects, either in the statutes or their practical application, to state the causes of the same, and recommend such measures as might be deemed necessary for their correction, suggesting such alterations as, in the judgment of the Committee, would tend to the orderly government of the students, and to the ascer taining and enforcing their attention and proficiency.
