This graphic novel is so cute! Written and set in Portland, this story promotes individuality. This graphic novel empowers young girls to follow their passions despite what others may say. Be who you are and be true to yourself! Loved it and bought a copy for a young family member. Excited to give it to her.

I first noticed "Roller Girl" on a list of best books for tween girls. As a parent of a tween (and a younger girl who loves graphic novels), I decided to check it out. It's really, really well done. The story focuses on Astrid, a Portland 12-year-old dealing with shifting friendships, a desire for growing independence and other pre-teen challenges. When she decides to attend a roller derby camp without her BFF, she has to find her own way in a new group of people while mastering a new set of skills. Along the way, she dyes her hair blue, fights with her mom and picks out a roller derby name. My daughters and I all read this book in a day. The kids enjoyed the story; I enjoyed having an excuse to talk with them about friends, middle school, boys and more. Thumbs up from all of us!

I bought this book for my own roller girl for her 10th birthday. I told her I wanted to read it when she was done. She handed it to me a few hours later and said she was done. She read it cover to cover without looking up once she started. I expected a silly childish story. What I got was a funny, uplifting, sad, heartfelt story about girls in one of the toughest stages of their lives. I laughed and cried and felt good when I was finished. I cannot recommend this book more for anybody with a pre-teen and anybody and everybody who is in love with roller derby.
