It is New Years' Eve, 1938, and everything is about to change for Katey Kontent, a young woman trying to disguise her Brooklyn origins and make her way through glamorous Manhattan. She and her vivacious roommate Eve encounter the dapper and well-to-do Tinker Grey; their meeting ignites a tinder keg that will cause a host of bizarre, compelling, and complicated characters to explode into Katey's world. The Rules of Civility conjures up a jazz New York that is simultaneously glamorous and gritty, full of martinis, music, Marxists, witty women, ambition, and unapologetic decadence. What must Katey and her contemporaries do in order to choose who they are to become? This wistful yet lively novel questions how you can reinvent yourself and still abide by rules of civility- and how, when civility lapses, you can learn to forgive.

Loved the book! Good fiction is the magic carpet that transports me to never never land! Reminded me of F. Scot Fitzgerald

This book is well written, and is a real page turner. The action takes place in the 1930's, but the storytelling is very modern. An excellent read.

An astonishing first novel. Great character development and wonderful use of metaphor.

There's never a dull moment in this book, not that it's frenetic, but that the plot keeps moving, the characters are engaging, and the twist at the end is truly a surprise. Towles transports his readers -- you feel as if you are walking the streets of 1930's New York City along with the characters. I've never read a female protagonist written so well by a man. Amor Towles, please write another book soon!

It touched a chord with me. It is based on the Rules of Civility that George Washington wrote. This book really made me think and feel. I don't know how to put it but I actually had a strong emotional response to it. This is a must read. I found it when Amazon had it as their deal of the day. It is a wonderful story done in a bygone era.

What a book. Towles writes with the clarity of a latter day Fitzgerald. His spare dramady of manners is a sheer delight.

F.ScottFitgerald must have been Towles' muse...what a delight to get lost in the images and characters of 1930's New York City. Pour yourself a gin and let Katey Kontent show you a glimpse of classes and choices that define our lives. I can't wait for Towles' next novel.

They drank bathtub gin, they dressed like flappers and went to speakeasies. Prohibition was over, but the excesses of golden boys and girls continued. This journey to 1938 New York is narrated by a character who is transported after seeing an exhibition photograph of the man who typified that era for her. This book provides a time-travel experience for the reader who wants to be there, not just visit. It is a trip through the strata of depression-era New York which will leave you with your own memories of 1938.

We have all had chance encounters that changed our lives, and Katey and Eve are no exception when they meet Tinker on New Year's Eve in 1938 in New York City. They and the other characters in this first novel of Amor Towles were all complex and interesting and continually surprised me with their life choices. I feel all of us, men and women alike, would love to have a friend like witty, intelligent Katey Kontent. After I finished reading the book, I listened to the audio recording and loved it just as much.

This book was recommended to me after I told a bookseller my favorite novel is THE GREAT GATSBY. Although the narrator is not as detached as Fitzgerald's Nick Carraway, I appreciated the elegant tone of this novel about pre-World War II New York society life as told from the perspective of an outsider making her way in. A great debut; I'm looking forward to Mr. Towles' next novel.
