This book was required reading for an undergradate class I took as a bilingual education major and I am forever grateful to the professor for assigning it. Jonathan Kozol has spent his lifetime as a student advocate (as teacher and author) and stalwart supporter of PUBLIC EDUCATION in the U.S. It took several years to get this book published due to what many asserted was controversial material: it revealed the contemptuous inequality of educational opportunities in communities in the Midwest that exemplified what was (and continues to be) practiced nationwide. There are several passages that brought me to tears and I will forever hold the heartbreaking images of so many children victimized by the perpetuation (and acceleration) of poverty in our nation. Corporatization of public education to "Fix" education across the country (thus making it a huge profit-making machine for private corporations)as demonstrated by "No Child Left Behind" and now "Race to the Top" with their attendant multi-million dollar testing schemes is abominable. Add to that the villification of dedicated teachers that are woefully underpaid and unrecognized for their commitment to their profession and their students and a disastrous formula that corrupts and undermines public education(and access to quality education nationwide)is created. Another must-read for anyone interested in the future of our children across the nation! Kozol's writing is riveting!
