Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Publisher Comments

Mrs. Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, was last seen during a field trip to Black Vine Swamp. The schools headmaster and the police seem to have accepted the sketchy, unsigned note explaining that her absence is due to a “family emergency.” Theres no real evidence of foul play. But still, Nick and Marta dont buy it. Something weird is definitely going on.

Carl Hiaasen is a columnist for the Miami Herald and is the author of many bestselling books, including Sick Puppy, Nature Girl, and The Downhill Lie. He lives in Florida.

Review

"Hiaasen's gumbo tastes a lot like his previous efforts, pitting conservation against reckless greed and setting the can-do of youth among determined Floridian quirkiness. But there's a reason why a recipe tastes so good time and again." Booklist

Synopsis

The school's headmaster and the police seem to have accepted the sketchy, unsigned note explaining that her absence is due to a "family emergency." There's no real evidence of foul play. But still, Nick and Marta don't buy it. Something weird is definitely going on.

Synopsis

From Newbery Honoree Carl Hiaasen comes this New York Times bestseller set in Florida's Everglades in which an eccentric eco-avenger, a stuffed rat named Chelsea, a wannabe Texas oilman, a singing substitute teacher, and a ticked-off panther can't stop two kids on a mission to find their missing teacher
Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, is missing. She disappeared after a school field trip to Black Vine Swamp. And, to be honest, the kids in her class are relieved.
But when the principal tries to tell the students that Mrs. Starch has been called away on a "family emergency," Nick and Marta just don't buy it. No, they figure the class delinquent, Smoke, has something to do with her disappearance.
And he does But not in the way they think. There's a lot more going on in Black Vine Swamp than any one player in this twisted tale can see. It's all about to hit the fan, and when it does, the bad guys better scat.

"Ingenious . . . Scat won't disappoint Hiaasenphiles of any age." --The New York Times
"Woohoo It's time for another trip to Florida--screwy, gorgeous Florida, with its swamps and scammers and strange creatures (two- and four-legged). Our guide, of course, is Carl Hiaasen." --DenverPost.com

Scat lets just say it was a pretty good book!!! Scat is about this boy named, Nick who is on a mission with his friend named, Marta to find his teacher, Ms.Starch. I don’t think they know what they are in for but I can’t give out too much. Nick also has another life other than helping his teacher and the environment. His dad is in Iraq fighting for our country, when Nick gets some good news and bad. It’s pretty shocking what Nick goes through. So that’s the good review the bad thing what I really didn’t like about this book was that in the previous books, hoot, and flush was that there was always a bully in scat there really isn't a bully other than Ms. Starch lol, but after in my opinion Scat is on the top charts of the book I’ve read. Along with the other Carl Hiaasen books. I really do recommend this book to everyone that likes an adventure and loves!!!! The environment so if you want to read this go ahead.
