This is an enjoyable fable about two sister islands, one industrious and one agrarian, and what the people of each choose to do with their resources and energies. Quite timely, and well-told.
But what my now adult children and I clearly remember are the marvelous, detailed illustrations. There are pictures throughout, but the ones that fill the double-leaf spread between the pages of text are quite special. They foreshadow the story's potential re-enactment of what befell a mystery third island.
The large hardcover opens wide on a child's lap so they, and you, can compare what's happening on the islands in minute detail. You can spend wonderful time together comparing and talking about what's happening and why the people are doing what they're doing, just looking at these large full-page spreads. Plus, it helps build the impending doom! What will happen?
I am passing this worn, but very loved book down to my children's children now to be loved again.
