This dark and thrilling adventure, with an unforgettable heroine, will captivate fans of steampunk, fantasy, and romance.

On her 18th birthday, Lena Mattacascar decides to search for her father, who disappeared into the northern wilderness of Scree when Lena was young. Scree is inhabited by Peculiars, people whose unusual characteristics make them unacceptable to modern society. Lena wonders if her father is the source of her own extraordinary characteristics and if she, too, is Peculiar. On the train she meets a young librarian, Jimson Quiggley, who is traveling to a town on the edge of Scree to work in the home and library of the inventor Mr. Beasley. The train is stopped by men being chased by the handsome young marshal Thomas Saltre. When Saltre learns who Lenas father is, he convinces her to spy on Mr. Beasley and the strange folk who disappear into his home, Zephyr House. A daring escape in an aerocopter leads Lena into the wilds of Scree to confront her deepest fears.

Praise for The Peculiars

STARRED REVIEW

"McQuerry offers a brooding northwest setting touched by steampunk elements to tell a story that is in equal parts inventive fantasy, light romance, and thrilling adventure. With a backdrop as strong as its heroine, this one is a page-turner."

--Booklist, starred review

“The Peculiars combines a teenage girls search for her identity with a setting that merges the genres of fantasy, gothic and steampunk. A light romance, a bit of adventure and the authors inclusion of historical notes complete this delightful offering.”

Synopsis

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series

I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelinas black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their familys good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fevers survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but its Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like theyve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. I was amazed at how good this was, I was completely swept into the story and the world described in the book. I have always loved fantasy and this is by far one of my favorites. I couldn't stop reading this and when I heard there was a companion to this I read that just as fast. Overall this was an excellent book filled with adventure, romance, and captivating characters! It's such a creative story with a magical world.

A delicious story with thorough characterizations. The heroine is complicated and reminds me of girls/women I know. I root for Katsa as I do my friends. Suspenseful and charming it's a story of intrigue, suspense, self-discovery and the inspiration of travel. It's very hard to put down.

I was positively surprised by the excellent quality of storytelling in Graceling. The story works beautifully on several dimensions, showing the developmental process of Katsa, as well as her love story with prince Po, all within a whirl of well developed plot. The frames of the actual story are well written too, and it is very easy to get into the world of gracelings. Awesome book! I hope Kristin Cashore writes more soon.

I LOVED Graceling! If you are looking for a new fantasy series, look no further! Katsa is a fascinating character that I sometimes feel I can relate to, and who sometimes feels so amazingly foreign, and in such a refreshingly different way than Tolkien's elves (and so many other fantasy characters) do. I love the concept of a Grace; it is a new and unique twist into the realm of fantasy. The characters are wonderfully built, as is the land of seven kingdoms, and the political interactions throughout. I was quite excited to discover on Ms. Cashore’s web-site that a prequel, Fire, is coming in the future, as well as a sequel! This was a great read, and I would recommend it for any YA readers and adults as well!
