I haven't found anything by Cathy Johnson I didn't love. However I felt I needed to comment on this book because it is so special. I paint outdoors, mostly in the mountains near here. This book explains so many things and is beautifully illustrated. It sounds cliche to say both beginners and experts will enjoy this book, but in this case it is true. I have been painting for quite a few years, but I have learned a lot from this little treasure. I am always pleasantly surprised when I look back through it for inspiration. She starts with chapters on tools and equipment and then tips on getting started: simplifying things, hints on procedures and making expressive and impressive sketches. She covers the basic rules of course, but what I like most is her great tips on field sketching. Can't say enough. Inspiring and 228 pages of valuable information.
