Excellent debut novel by a writer with a remarkable voice. From the first page, I was hooked--completely taken in by the mesmerizing world Ivey has created. By turns heartbreaking, magical, and wildly hopeful, The Snow Child has the rare quality of never failing to surprise.

I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel by an author I'll be looking forward to her next. It's somewhat of an enhanced glimpse of reality that left me with a feeling of not caring that it couldn't all be true. I loved the vagueness of it. The setting in the harsh landscape with chilling Alaskan winters mixed with the idea a young girl could thrive and make a wonderful life for herself in the forest is such a unique premise for a story it made the story enchanting to read. I loved the characters with their sensitive yet strong natures and the trials they went through. I wanted to move in with them and experience the simple pleasures and relationship with their "snow child". I've never read a book quite like this - it was such a good read!

What a poignant tale. "The Snow Child," tells the story of Mabel and Jack who move to Alaska to run away from the grief of losing a child. This is the beginning of a fairy tale like magical book which has to be read to be understood. The magic of their surroundings creates a magic for Jack and Mabel but with this magic comes loss too. The story moves along with twisst and turns which grip the reader and one is kept turning pages till the very end.

I have always believed in wonder and magic and The Snow Child has reaffirmed my sentiment. It is a story of love, what we consider our family, and the trials that this love and family may bring about in our lives. It brought an enchantment into my life while reading this lovely tale and I was sorry that it had to end.

The sort of book I didn't want to end; when it did I hugged it to my chest and smiled with gratitude. Beautiful story and gorgeous, flowing prose. So well done.

I recently moved to Alaska and read this book while lying under my covers and watching the snow fall, making me feel like I was in the story. It's a tale full of magic, mystery and kindhearted, likable characters. I found myself cheering for all of them, all the while waiting for tragedy to strike. Thoroughly engaging and highly recommended.

A sad, strange, lovely fairy tale with fully-realized characters. I lived in this book the whole time I was reading it.

A very real, yet magical glimpse at the dark heart of Alaska. A land of dreams, intense darkness and intense light, where depression and elation grow side by side. Step back in time to the rough and tumble 1920s and an Alaskan homestead where a woman's resolve, sanity and commitment is tested by a young girl born of snow and belief. You will struggle to put this book down, unless perhaps it begins to snow outside and you head out to build or dream your own snow child.

This book was a very sweet read. I loved how the characters came slowly to each other and to us, and how the older couple in the book were so devoted to each other. The descriptions of the conditions up there made me shiver and I felt the main character's anguish so acutely it was hard to read sometimes. I also loved that there was no real explanation for what happened - it just happened - and that was that. The writing was spare and yet pulled me into the story and that world immediately. There is a harshness to the world the characters live in, but the warmth of love and friendship makes the place seem almost delightful. Well worth the time to read.

This book is part fable, part fiction. One minute you're thinking this is purely farce and a very old story, another moment you're thinking that this could have really happened to someone. Wintry nights are perfect for reading about this couple in Alaska, the pain they suffer trying to make a go of the land. You also appreciate the help of good neighbors.

This book is a wonderful blend of myth, fantasy, stark and precise landscape description, and geographic psychology! The story-telling itsself is mesmerizing. The Russian folktale "The Snow Child" is intricately bound with the relationship of an older, childless couple whose relationship seems as lifeless and colorless as the Alaskan winter until the Snow Child appears. Mabel, our "snow mother" seems herself to be reborn from psychological and emotional "snow". Is the child truely a creature of snow created from longing snd desire or a flesh and blood girl born in mystery?

I have to admit I have a soft spot for fairy tale re-tellings, even those fairy tales I may not have read before. Ivey's The Snow Child is a re-imagining of the Russian fairy tale "Snegurochka" ("The Snow Maiden" in English). The scene that Ivey paints of Alaska is just as I imagine it would be in the 20's and the old couple's story of how they came to live their is heartbreaking. This book offers the reader to go on this family's ride of joys and sorrows. I liked that the author didn't spell things out in black and white as to what the girl was exactly, leaving something to the imagination of the readers. I also enjoyed how the author approached the themes of the mystery of the wilderness, nature vs. civilization, the idea of taming nature and gender roles.

The Snow Child left me in awe. It was incredible! I was amazed that it's Ivey's first novel, because her writing is breathtaking; she has a rare talent for writing beautiful, flowy paragraphs without being wordy or overly fluffy. The story was magical, mysterious, and moving. I was so entranced that I didn't want to stop reading. It seems that more and more authors these days write about subjects they've extensively researched; it's rare to find an author writing a fictional novel about something he/she really knows about like Ivey does here. It's obvious that she has forged a life in the unrelenting Alaskan wilderness just like her characters. I really hope she writes more. As it is, I'll be purchasing a copy of this book and reading it again. This is by far my favorite book of 2012--LOVED it. 5 stars!

Amazing talent, beautifully delivered. This is a five sense book, and maybe a sixth and seventh as well. I could hear a bull moose snorting, swan screaming, snow crunching, river ice cracking. I could taste moose meat for the thirtieth and 100th time; smell wet wool and blood, birch fire and moonshine. I could touch the two-man saw, feel the weight of an ax, and the tiny threads of intricate embroidery. And always, always the snow and the earth beneath. I could see rows and rows of crops growing in the heat of the short Alaska season - in fact I dreamed about it last night. Sense of place is superbly developed, as expertly crafted as a prize winning pie, or a winter coat made reverently by hand. Ivey grew up in Alaska and clearly loves where she still lives. The characters in this debut novel are cradled, grown, tried and triumphed in the rugged, unforgiving wilderness. And out of the night in an Alaska blizzard, when grief and solitude are crusted around homesteader hearts, a little girl with pale eyelashes and a fur hat appears in the frost on the window.
