From now on I'm Alan of Trebond, the younger twin. I'll be a knight.

In a time when girls are forbidden to be warriors, Alanna of Trebond wants nothing more than to be knight of the realm of Tortall. So she finds a way to switch places with her brother, Thom. But she also makes an enemy of the prince's uncle, the powerful and charming Duke Roger....

This is a fantastic start to an incredible series. Basically, Alanna's brother is about to be sent away to learn to become a knight while Alanna is going to be sent away to a convent. Instead of going, Alanna dresses as a boy and switches places with her brother. I love this series because I have not read a fantasy book in which a female character dresses as a boy (and especially not one where the female character wishes to be a knight).

I read this book when I was in Junior High and even though I am almost 22, I have never come across a more original storyteller than Pierce. She immediately grabs your attention from the first page. Alanna is a great character. One who makes girls proud and feel they can do anything their heart desires. Her courage and willingness to beat all odds makes all readers want to cheer her on. This is the beginning of her journey to become a lady knight and a powerful magician. Once you start, you will not be able to stop.
