The now-classic memoir that shocked, outraged, and ultimately changed the way America looked at the civil rights movement and the black experience.

By turns shocking and lyrical, unblinking and raw, the searingly honest memoirs of Eldridge Cleaver are a testament to his unique place in American history. Cleaver writes in Soul on Ice, "I'm perfectly aware that I'm in prison, that I'm a Negro, that I've been a rapist, and that I have a Higher Uneducation." What Cleaver shows us, on the pages of this now classic autobiography, is how much he was a man.

Synopsis

The classic memoir that shocked, outraged, and ultimately changed the way America looked at the civil rights movement and the black experience.

With a preface by Ishmael Reed - "As with Malcolm X, Cleaver's book is a spiritual autobiography. An odyssey of a soul in search of itself, groping toward a personal humanism which will give meaning to life."--The Progressive

Synopsis

Originally published in 1968, "Soul On Ice" shocked outraged and ultimately challenged the way America saw the civil rights movement and the Black experience. Written while Cleaver, the former Black Panther Minister of Information, was in California's Folsom State Prison this collection of searingly honest autobiographical essays explores the authors own difficult history and larger issues such as the assassination of Malcolm X and the turbulence of the 1960s. Soul On Ice gives intelligent, insightful testimony to the author's political views, venting his frustrations with and anger at American society in the wake of the civil fights movements first wave.

I haven't read “Soul of Ice” yet. I can't wait to after reading the reviews! I was very young when the racial movement started. Seeing and hearing things on television and in the papers were upsetting. But I was lucky to learn more about it in college, reading the "The Nature of Prejudice" by Gordon W. Allport, "The Content of Our Character" by Shelby Steele, "Black Rage" by William H. Grier & Price M. Cobbs, and The Wave" by Todd Strasser, in Multicultural Studies class. This class changed the way I saw the world. I have continued to read all of my life. I was about 9 years old when the busing started in the schools in Detroit, my neighbor’s were all up in arms and I mean that literally! I stood on my front lawn and wondered what they could be thinking! Why would they want to shoot another person, a perfect stranger, just because of the color of their skin? I was lucky to learn more about it in college, reading the "The Content of Our Character" in class. It changed the way I saw the world. I hope this will be as meaningful. RACE is defined in science as a different species that is unable to reproduce with other species. So by definition people of color, Negroes, Blacks, or African American Americans, are not a different race, that is a misnomer.
