This book is bittersweet, and perhaps more bitter than sweet. But that judgement might vary with a person's age. The protagonist, Joe Allston, is man whose age has caught up with him. Throughout the book this fact resurfaces and colors the mood. Much of the story occurs in the past but even then we are frequently reminded of Joe's morose point of view. On the other hand, there's the story of a lifelong love between Joe and his wife. And we are reminded, during a visit from an old friend of theirs, that aging with grace might be preferable to simply aging.
