Synopsis
Excerpt from Stratford-on-Avon Corporation Records: The Guild Accounts
The Records included in this Volume, the publication of which has been completed in the stratford-on-avon Herald, are the accounts (in nearly all cases annual) of the Masters and of the Proctors of the Guild of Stratford - at first called the Guild of the Holy Cross, and known later on by the additional titles of Our Blessed Lady and the Nativity of S. John Baptist. One Account (n o. 15) describes the Guild as that of Our Blessed Lady only; and in a much later Account (n o. 105) it is called the Guild of the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Mary the Virgin, and S. John Baptist.
The Accounts are written upon skins of parchment, sewn together, so as, in most instances, to form rolls of considerable length. And are included among the documents described in the Calendar made by Dr. Halliwell-phillipps as The Unbound Records of the Guild. As they were not, how ever, of special Shakespearean interest, they were simply catalogued, without order of subject or date.
These Accounts have now been separated from the other documents, carefully repaired, arranged in order of date, and their contents fully calendared. This work has been entrusted by the Record Committee to Mr. W. J. Hardy, the expenses of repairs having been defrayed by the Corporation, and of calendaring by Mr. Flower, the Chairman of the Committee.
