Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. While recording her mother's slide into senilty and her own honest and complex response to it, Madeleine L'Engle also explores the lives of the strong, brave, and charming women of her family, also named Madeleine. Although watching as her mother slips further and further away is heartbreaking, the stories of these women made me marvel at the rich and rewarding lives buried in all our family trees. For anyone dealing with the tragedies of old age and Alzheimers [and most of us will eventually be touched by one or both], this memoir may bring comfort, understanding, and some peace.
