Synopses & Reviews
From surfing's "Golden Era" comes Surfboard Architects telling the story of the legends who embraced the ancient Hawaiian sport of waveriding, who built the premier brands of surfing’s “Golden Era” and fueled the initial surf craze of the sixties and beyond. These legends epitomized the post-WWII American dream. They were great surfers, engineers, surfboard designers, and craftsmen who brought the laid-back Southern California surf lifestyle and ultimately, a multitude of extreme sports, to the world stage. Their companies, often started in a garage or under a pier, began the now ten billion dollar worldwide surf industry. The individuals profiled in this collection are true legends of the sport of surfing. Filled with full-color brochures and ads, product diagrams/blueprints, memorabilia, and archival photographs, this is a treasure trove of surfing mementos for surfing enthusiasts young and old.
About the Author
Guy Motil, internationally acclaimed photographer, former publisher of Longboard Magazine and author of Surfboards (FalconGuides), started surfing in 1962 at the age of 12 and surfboards have been part of his life ever since. He has surfed them, traveled the world with them, on occasion slept beside them, and more times than he should admit, hes had to repair them. To date he has shot private collections (few public collections have existed) in all parts of the world from South Africa to Australia, from New York to Hawaii, and now has a photo collection of over 4,000 historically significant surfboards.
