Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier.

On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list.

Through Hannah and Clay’s dual narratives, debut author Jay Asher weaves an intricate and heartrending story of confusion and desperation that will deeply affect teen readers.

One of my favorite books. A book that will haunt you and make you think differently than the way you did before. It teaches us that we have no clue what impact we have on other's lives and that we need to be more considerate of others. A definite must read if you liked If I Stay by Gayle Forman or The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.

This is one of my favorite books. Its the kind of story that grips you from the start. Its the kind of book that makes you think about everything and nothing all at once. Your reading one minute and then you start thinking about the things you have done. Did I really do that? Could I have done this? etc. It becomes more then fiction to you- or at least it did to me- its a book I will always own, one I will have my children read one day. Because its just that kind of eye opening book. I think every teen, male or female, should read this at least once.

Fantastic book. I read it through in a night because I could not put it down. It really makes you stop and think about how your actions affect others, and the power of life or death that words can have.

Thirteen Reasons Why: written by Jay Asher Thirteen Reasons Why was truly (in my opinion) an amazing book. If I had to give it an out of 5 star rating, it would probably be... 5 stars! I have read it more than once , just so I could make sure that what I read was really happening. It is very intense and definitely not a book you should read before bed. Not because it is gruesome or disturbing, but because you are left hanging at every corner. It does have its moments though. The eeriness of Hannah Baker’s voice on the recordings churns your stomach into knots. Jay Asher has very descriptive writing that paints a picture in your head. As in the book, it reads, “Inside the shoebox is a rolled-up tube of bubble-wrap. I unroll that and discover seven loose audiotapes. Each tape has a dark blue number painted in the upper right-hand corner, possibly with nail polish.” The words he prestigiously places has you feeling like you are truly the one who she is talking to. And you could really feel how Clay Jensen felt about Hannah. The book, in all, was jaw dropping. Mystery, love, and death. Its a full package. It truly conveys the problem with suicide and how those who have committed suicide, or who are bullied, feel. This book is a peek into a life that is quite honestly very possible. One girl who wanted to speak to those who killed her, and to those who loved her... Review by: Lindsey Aytes

A heartbreaking story detailing the incidents, some large and some small, that drive a high school girl to kill herself. The story builds slowly, moment upon moment, as the reader sees how even the smallest thing can have a dramatic effect. The story stays very true to high school life and shows how "ordinary high school life" can weigh on someone. A must read for every teenager and parent, teacher, or counselor of teenagers.

An exceptional YA book that this 40-something enjoyed thoroughly! My 15 year old also read it as part of her English class and it made a big, positive impact on her, too. Jay Asher is now on my auto-buy list.

Simply fantastic are the words that come to mind after indulging into this story from Jay Asher. Much of what made Thirteen Reasons Why so spectacular was the fact that it switched from the playing tapes to the main characters thoughts. You might think it would be more of an arduous read, seeing how it may appear that the view point switched so often. However, you are only in one viewpoint the whole time: the main character's. This is why I find the structure of this novel so genius; it allows you to feel the intensity and emotion the main character feels throughout the book, while unfolding a complex story. The theme's aren't anywhere near mythical vampires or fantasies; teen suicide is real, and I know while reading, it affected me on a deeper level. The novel stresses that suicides are never simple, that many experiences and moments can lead to a teen choosing to end their life. Thirteen Reasons Why is most definitely worth your time, and could be a life changing book to any teenager.

Thirteen R3asons Why by Jay Asher. This was a difficult book to read but one of the best I've come across dealing with teen suicides. If you have high school age children living in your home it's a MUST read. This one will shake up your complacent world, make you sit up and notice. Part mystery, teenage angst, you will follow the map with Hannah's words and thoughts.

13 Reasons Why is an excellent book. It is filled with suspense, love and mysteries. It was so hard to put the book down because each page took you in further and further into a new mystery. This book is about a girl who committed suicide. No one knows why she did it but she is leaving behind some clues: tapes. She is sending around tapes that she recorded her message onto and sending them to the 13 people that gave her a reason to kill herself. A boy named Clay is the main character who receives the tapes. He keeps waiting for the right tape: the tape that tells him what he did wrong. Once he finds it, he puts it into the tape player, shuts out the sound around him, and listens intently, “Clay, its okay. You did nothing wrong. I am going to tell you what you did right…” That is just some of the suspense waiting for you to come and pick up the book. It takes your breath away.

13 reasons why by Jay Asher Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews Jay Asher's brilliant first novel is a moving, highly original story that focuses on a set of audiotapes made by a girl before she committed suicide, and which explain to 13 people the reasons why she decided to end her life. Told in a highly effective duel narrative -- alternating between the girl s voice and the thoughts of a boy who is listening -- this honest, poignant story reveals how other people's actions shape, and by extension can ruin, an individual's faith in people. Intensely powerful and painfully real, Thirteen Reasons Why reveals how brutal high school can be, the consequences of spreading rumors, and the lasting effects of suicide on those left behind. (Synopsis provided by goodreads) This is a very serious book with a very serious topic. It’s a book that should be read by people of all ages. I think it is a very powerful book, it’s now the second time I have read it. I have seen some people that say they hate the book and think it absolves Hannah of any wrong doing and places the blame solely on the 13 people. I think this is all a matter of perception. In the book, Clay doesn’t think Hannah is trying to absolve herself, nor does Hannah. She was merely saying that the peoples action helped her make the decision. I didn’t think that the author was condoning suicide at all. This is a very well written book and one of the best young adult novels I have ever found. I would strongly encourage everyone to read it and take the message to heart, what we say and do to one another can have a profound effect on another person’s life. Overall rating ***** 5 out of 5 stars Cover art: I liked it with Hannah staring into the distance. Obtained My local library

This is an amazing book! It sucks in the reader who grows very attaches to the one character that is lost :( it just goes to show how our actions affect others. This book will give you a different perspective on life and will (hopefully) lead you to treat others better. I love this book, please read!

I wasn't sure how I would feel about this book, but it literally took my breath away. I could totally relate to Hannah, and how she felt, but I really understood clay too. When he cried I cried. This book has a lesson for everyone, and I think everyone can relate to it on some level. It is definitely a must read!!!!!!

Someone in your school has committed suicide, but it wasn't just anyone, you liked that person, maybe even loved them, and now they're just...gone. Clay Jensen is still grieving over the loss of Hannah Baker when one morning, a box filled with tapes shows up at his door. Out of the seven tapes there are thirteen stories told by, yours truly, dead Hannah Baker, each story is a reason why she committed suicide. Clay never did anything to Hannah so why is he on there? Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is a story that always keeps you on the edge of your seat, each story you find out more and more about Hannah's path to committing suicide. After reading I found it a little depressing, I felt sorry for all of those people that were on the tapes, but more importantly I got a better grip on those who decided to kill themselves and what they went through.

I could not put this book down! Though I didn't like Hannah Baker much at all I did adore the male main character, Clay. The writing style was like a breath of fresh air and the authors notes in the back of the book made me happy and were a perfect end to a great book.

This is among my favorite book I discovered it quite literally, by accident. I was walking down a row of books and I saw it on the floor, like someone had dropped, picked it up and it looked interesting. Bout two months later I decided to go on and buy it and that night I stayed up all night reading it. It is hauntingly beautiful and descriptive and visual. I couldn't put it down. Very few books have sat me down to be read in one sitting. This is a haunting book, beautiful I must say. A perfect read for anyone. And to be honest, it changed how I thought about things, how I interacted with people. I highly suggest reading it. You won't be disappointed. I give Thirteen reasons Why 5 out of 5 stars and I will for sure be re reading it several times. Thank you whoever dropped it that day last October :)

This book is very addicting and forces you to keep turning its pages. If that's all that you want to find in a book then this would suit you, however I read this book along with a group of friends and all of us agreed that this story leaves the reader with a feeling of depression after reading it. The story filled with suicide, harassment, and hopelessness does have humor and other things to break up the melancholy, but especially near the ending, the book gives the reader dangerous feelings. I admire the author for being able to express such feelings to the readers, but I personally did not want those feelings while reading this book.

Hannah is dead at the tender age of 16. Tragically, she took her own life. But she's left something behind: a box of thirteen audio tapes that she hopes will explain the reasons she chose to kill herself. Thirteen Reasons Why is Jay Asher's debut novel that deals with some powerful subject matter: teen suicide. I was prepared for preachy. I was prepared for condescension. But I wasn't prepared for what I actually read, which turned out to be a brutally honest exploration of both the victim and those left behind (he invalidates neither) wondering why and how such a thing could have happened. Author Jay Asher has a rare, special touch with his readers. He actually understands that most mysterious and elusive of creatures: the teenager. Hannah's reasons for killing herself would appear, to most adults, inconsequential. But Asher understands that her reasons are very, very real to a teenager and he treats them with the seriousness they deserve. Likewise, he is able to convey the angst of her classmates who are left feeling confused, guilty and vulnerable while they try to make sense of the tragedy. And yet Asher is still able to subtly provide answers and lessons, including our moral responsibilities to our fellow human beings, the subtle signs of suicide and how we unknowingly exacerbate it. Perhaps the most powerful scene in the novel revolves around Hannah's last effort to reach out for help from her high school guidance counselor. Asher brilliantly depicts a counselor who wants so badly to help Hannah, but simply cannot because of his inability to see the problem through the eyes of a teenage girl. There is, as it turns out, no one person to blame for a tragedy like this. Anyone could have stopped it along the way, but tragically no one did. Very highly recommended for both teens and adults. If you have a teen in mind for this book, I would recommend that you (or better yet, their parents) read it first to ensure that the seriousness of the subject matter is, in your view, appropriate for them.

This book was amazing. I read it three times, and loved it more with every read. It tells Hannah's story amazingly and innovatively, but it is absolutely heartbreaking to watch her downward spiral and all the people who did nothing to help and everything to push her further towards suicide. I would reccomend this book to every young adult reader.,
