Publisher Comments

A poignant and inspirational love story set in Burma, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats spans the decades between the 1950s and the present. When a successful New York lawyer suddenly disappears without a trace, neither his wife nor his daughter Julia has any idea where he might be… until they find a love letter he wrote many years ago, to a Burmese woman they have never heard of. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father’s past, Julia decides to travel to the village where the woman lived. There she uncovers a tale of unimaginable hardship, resilience, and passion that will reaffirm the reader’s belief in the power of love to move mountains.

Review

“[The Art of Hearing Heartbeats] is a love story set in Burma…imbued with Eastern spirituality and fairy-tale romanticism….Fans of Nicholas Sparks and/or Elizabeth Gilbert should eat this up.” Kirkus Reviews

Review

“Sweetly tragic.” Library Journal

Review

“No matter what I even attempt to say, I can’t possibly capture the absolute magic of this book. Like a spell, it haunts. Like love, it’s going to endure.” Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures of You

Review

“A story at once both poignant and joyous, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats reaffirms how love can transform the harshest of realities into a mystical one. Sendker takes us from contemporary, upscale New York to impoverished Burma, weaving a complex tale that is part romance, part father-daughter story. Reading this book was like reading poetry, with full attention required for each sentence. A thoroughly immersive and enjoyable read.” Margaret Dilloway, author of How to Be an American Housewife

Review

“Set in Burma, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats is a rare novel. Telling the story of a young blind man’s journey through a world of auditory intensity, Jan-Philipp Sendker renews one’s faith in the possibility of real, pure love. I finished the book in tears.” Shawna Yang Ryan, author of Water Ghosts

Peace..... that is the word that comes to mind when this book is mentioned. After hearing about how wonderful this book for a long time, I was thrilled to find it was our Book Club selection. This story met all my major qualifications for a 5 Star rating. Good character development, extensive location details and set in another country. And most importantly a deep love between the characters. I highly recommend The Art of Hearing Heartbeats. The minute i finished this book i ordered the sequel, A Well Tempered Heart. I cant wait!

This was a beautifully written book about a woman searching for her father, who had disappeared several years prior. Traveling to a foreign country, meeting new people, and finding the most wonderful stories, she begins to learn the many sides of her multifaceted father. Besides discovery, this book was also part love story. Not quite innocent, as both knew the consequences, or quixotic, because it in fact was real and true, nonetheless, it was a beautiful love expressed in forms both tangible and not. This story was elegant and simple, trusting and glad. It was satisfying, yet it also made me restless in an unnameable way. This book taught me that it is possible for one person to love many things, in no order of importance, without frustration or spite. I’m glad I have it, and I hope you will be too.

One of the most beautifully written books I've read in years. Weaving the stories together of two that are passionately in love, the reader is drawn into a world of love...the type of love that keeps a heart beating.

This one sent me right over the moon. Art of Hearing Heartbeats is an evocative, haunting love story that caught my interest on page 2 and never let go. Set in Burma, told from different perspectives and unlike anything I've read before. The author is German, the translation is wonderful, the story simply brilliant! How could a tale about a grown American daughter searching for a reason for her father's disappearance be SO GOOD? It simply is. This book has spoiled me for anything else. Do yourself a big favor and read this amazing story.
