Spoken blessings are powerful. All throughout the Bible, we read stories of people's lives and lineages being radically shaped by a blessing spoken over them. So it's no surprise that Jesus took time in the Sermon on the Mount--one of his most powerful teachings--to speak blessings (the Beatitudes) and call God's favor upon his followers, including those whom the religious elite might deem unworthy or outsiders.
