His brother William's marriage had opened up to him also a career at court, and we find him enrolled as a groom of the privy chamber in 1526 and thenceforth in other minor court func tions throughout the reign of Henry VIII.8 This relation gave him the opportunity of pru dent marriage. He postponed that Step until he had passed forty, but when he did marry it was to assure the future of his descendants.
