Synopsis
Excerpt from The Diplomatic Service: An Abstract and Examination of Evidence Taken by the Select Committee of the House of Commons in 1870
It is now utterly impossible for a man of moderate means to go into the diplomatic service; at least it is the height of imprudence to do so. The judgment which I have formed is that no father would act prudently in putting his son into the diplomatic profession, unless he was prepared to allow him 500 a year.
