With the farewell prayer of her Presbyterian minister - "protect this young sister in that far land where sin doth abound and Satan lifteth up his head" - ringing in her ears, young Eva MacLean sets out from "civilized" Ontario to the far land of Hazelton in northwestern British Columbia in 1911. Eager for adventure but fearful - as a sheltered young wornan of that era would be - Eva recounts her experiences in Hazelton with her minister/ veterinarian hushand, Dan. Explaining why he spends more time doctoring than preaching, he says to Eva: I can reach more people by curing their horses than trying to save their souls."

About the Author
Eva MacLean left her settled, Presbyterian Ontario life behind in 1911 to follow her young minister/veterinarian husband to the 'wilds' of northwestern British Columbia (Hazelton). It was during the days of the mining rush and railroad building boom in the early years of this country. Her book The Far Land was originally written as a family history, the manuscript is now published as part of BC history.
