Excerpt from The History of the British Empire in India, Vol. 1
This description applies only to Hindostan according to the modern sense of that term. The East Indies of the Mid dle Ages, like the India of Classical times, comprehended the Burman empire, Siam, Camboja, cochin-china, and Malay, with the islands of Sumatra, the Moluccas, Java, in the Indian Sea. Its limits towards the west were likewise very extensive.
