About the Author

Trenton Lee Stewart, graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and author of the adult novel Flood Summer, lives in Arkansas with his wife and two sons. This is his debut children's novel.

Carson Ellis received her BFA from the University of Montana and has established a loyal following for her artistic collaborations with the band the Decemberists. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

`	Max , August 15, 2012 (view all comments by Max) If for some reason you haven't encountered this book already, you MUST read it now. I mean, only if you like to read young adult page-turners that involve a mystery solved by children in deadly danger. For all of us who were nerds as kids, or tomboys, or just, a bit...contrary, this is the book where us 'other kids' get to be heroes. It also is a phenomenal book to read out loud. My (adult) friend broke his leg badly and was laid up in bed for a month staying with us and we read it before bedtime to him. None of us wanted to go to sleep. Hooray Mysterious Benedict Society!

`	heath bar , November 30, 2010 (view all comments by heath bar) To join the Mysterious Benedict Society children have to pass a series of unusual tests after responding to a newspaper add. There are strict rules; if you don’t follow them or cheat, you will be disqualified. The children who are chosen are given a dangerous, but very important mission. It must be completed correctly; the human race depends on it. “You are our last possible hope. You are our only hope.” This shows you how important it is to complete the mission. The Mysterious Benedict Society is suspenseful and surprising; almost every time I thought I knew what would happen next, the characters did the exact opposite. You are sure to love this book if you like mystery, action, suspense, and humor. I know that these things made the book interesting and exciting for me.

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart is one of these books. It was totally enjoyable now but I think it would have been even more so had I been able to read it in my youth. This book is the first in a series and I think it will be a good standard for the new generation. It is empowering and puts a lot of emphasis on thought and reasoning but also values personality and physicality. Every kid will find someone to relate to and look up to in the Benedict Society.

I know a few young people that will relish it. Trenton Lee Stewart delivers beautifully. As a reader I enjoyed this novel, as an author I am impressed. Teachers and parents should definitely have this book in their libraries. It is not just for children either; people of all ages will love it.

Though strong on kid power, there exists a balance in the adult characters, who are neither too weak nor too strong. Quirky, fun, and serious all at the same time, this book is YA fiction that kids will enjoy, families can read together or adults can indulge in without guilt.
