Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

Publisher Comments

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
You may have heard of me.

So begins the tale of Kvothe-from his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, to years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime-riddled city, to his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a difficult and dangerous school of magic. In these pages you will come to know Kvothe as a notorious magician, an accomplished thief, a masterful musician, and an infamous assassin. But The Name Of The Wind is so much more-for the story it tells reveals the truth behind Kvothe's legend.

Told in Kvothe's own voice, this is the tale of the magically gifted young man who grows to be the most notorious wizard his world has ever seen. The intimate narrative of his childhood in a troupe of traveling players, his years spent as a near-feral orphan in a crime ridden city, his daringly brazen yet successful bid to enter a legendary school of magic, and his life as a fugitive after the murder of a king form a gripping coming-of-age story unrivaled in recent literature. A high-action story written with a poet's hand, The Name of the Wind is a masterpiece that will transport readers into the body and mind of a wizard.

Excellent book. If you read this book, and then book two, be prepared to pine for book three and its floating release date.

Patrick Rothfuss' first novel is amazing. While being a fantasy tale set in an imaginary land, the telling of the story is very concrete. You can almost feel the stones on your own feet as Rothfuss describes Kvothe running through the streets of town barefoot. This is a fantastic example of character development. While some of the periphery characters may seem two-dimensional, Kvothe almost steps out of the pages of the book, sits down next to you, and continues some long-halted conversation with you. And while it plays out like a memoir, you never feel like you're being let down, never bored by what's happening, even when the action is the seaming doldrums of day-to-day life. And this is just book one! Highly recommended!

10 stars! Epic doesn't even begin to describe this amazing debut novel. 13 years in the making, Id say he did a fantastic job! Patrick Rothfuss IS the new Tolkien. I cannot wait for the next book - The Wise Mans Fear.

I picked this up on a whim and couldn't have been more pleased, the story is well written and surprisingly easy to follow while remaining complex and engaging. I recommend it to those who enjoyed Harry Potter and those who didn't each I'm sure will find it worth their time.

This is the best thing I've read in a long while. If you liked Lord of the Rings, Patrick Rothfuss will blow you away. The writing is beautiful but at the same time each word pushes the story forward, keeping you glued to your seat.

One of the most well written fantasy novels by a first time author I have read. Wonderful story line that follows a typical fantasy role, yet it doesn't seem old or re-done. Harry Potter for adults.

What an excellent debut novel! I'm not usually one to read fantasy, especially in hardback from an unknown author, but this book was highly recommended to me. After I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I eagerly await more from this up and coming author! If he continues with this sort of great writing - he will be a star in his genre.

I picked up this Hard cover yesterday and just finished it this afternoon. This was an amazing read, very smooth not extreamly complicted, and full of excitement. Though some may dislike the break up of the story by the short interludes, I felt they played well into the story giving the reader a chance to get a look at narrator and what he thinks. The ending was terrific and ties up many lose ends, though it will be hard to wait for the next chapter in Kvothe's saga. Great first start and deff. looking forword to the next instalment. Now go pick up this book
