Synopsis
The work of these ten makers of modern theatre is the subject of the first part of Eric Bentley's classic anthology. Their ideas about their art and about the future possibilities of drama are revealed either through their own words or those of their best expositors.
The second part contains excerpts from the writings of such seminal commentators as George Lukacs, Romain Rolland, and Alexis de Tocqueville, which draw together the threads of Part One to provide an illuminating overview of the development of theatre from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century.
